Bacteria release bacterial extracellular vesicles (BEV), membrane-enclosed particles that contain
biomolecules, and can be recognized by the immune system. The discovery that BEV are present in
the blood circulation of cancer patients with impaired intestinal barrier integrity sparks interest in
unraveling the immune biological role of BEV, since they are hypothesized to influence the patient's
immune activity and therapy response.
