The PhD will chart the effects on male models of the rise of modern art in 19th-century Belgium, as moder-nism from the 1840s on challenged conventions precisely like those of the traditional artist’s model and of the idealized male nude. In doing so, it will unite an aesthetic, a sociological and a discursive perspective into an in-depth qualitative study.
