De invloed van selectieve 5-HT4 receptor agonisten op de vrijstelling van acetylcholine uit hersenschijfjes wordt nagegaan voor eventuele toepassing bij degeneratieve hersenaandoeningen gekenmerkt door geheugenverlies. Parallel wordt de invloed van de agonisten op perifere 5-HT4 receptoren in de gastro-intestinale tractus en in het hart nagegaan, ter selectie van de substanties met zo weinig mogelijk perifeer effect.
