Projectomschrijving

This project will adopt comparative and interdisciplinary approaches to the study of the European novel from the eighteenth century to the present. It focuses on the following issues, among others: 1. Migrating novels, novels of migration: What happens when novels cross borders? How are they adapted to new contexts? How do migrant or exile writers engage with new cultural and literary traditions? 2. The novel on the barricades: How does the European novel react to revolutions and other moments of social and political upheaval? And how does it process them in retrospect? 3. Stepping into the novel: How do readers attempt to identify with characters or experience the plots of novels through derivative products (such as games, fashions, decorations, etc.) or through behaviors? What types of novels are appropriated in this way? And how do these appropriations interpret and transform the works that inspire them?
