Project description

The project was submitted within the SIM program "Material Durability for Off-Shore (maduros)", with industrial partners OCAS (voördinator) Allard, ArcelorMittal, Bekaert, DEME Elsyca, G & G, Jan De Nul, Laborecel, Metalogic and Vincotte, and as academic partners KULeuven, UGent, VUB, Sirris and BIL. In an off-shore environment a material is simultaneously exposed to various degradation mechanisms: corrosive environment, fatigue loading, and abrasive conditions. A lack of knowledge about the combined effect of the mechanisms and the lack of testing infrastructure that enables large-scale validation under realistic conditions, materials and structures, the offshore industry today obliged to handle about consercatieve safety factors and is available certified materials pallet limited, leading to hog infrastructure, service and operating costs. The maduros program aims to tackle these issues in order to safeguard the competitive position of Flanders in the offshore industry. The present SBO is the first project to be submitted within maduros and focuses on the modeling of the damage mechanisms.
