People keep animals for various reasons, the main ones being companionship and production. Laboratory animals are also considered to be production animals, as a source of knowledge Animal species that are kept as pets are no longer limited to dogs and cats. The laboratory animal species used are also highly diversified. In the past, keeping animals often provided a one-sided benefit to humans. However, this has changed, especially since the mid-20th century, and more and more attention is being paid to the biological functioning, behaviour and affective state of animals. In short, more attention is paid to the subjective experience of the animals themselves and their state of welfare. The intended research for this funding focuses mainly on the behaviour of animals kept as companions or laboratory animals, behavioural welfare indicators and the question of how knowledge about animal welfare can be better integrated into society.
