Project description

The proposed project aims at combining anaerobic ammonium oxidation and anaerobic methane oxidation in granular sludge reactors in view of sustainable wastewater treatment.

Anaerobic ammonium oxidation and anaerobic methane oxidation both require (partial) nitritation of ammonium to nitrite as a preceding step. Analogous to the pratical implementation of autotrophic nitrogen removal, one can think of one-reactor or two-reactor configurations to realize combined anaerobic ammonium oxidation and anaerobic methane oxidation. depending on whether partial nitritation is realized in the same reactor or in a separate reactor, respectively.
