This project is aimed at the investigation of the formal and semantic properties of argument structure constructions in Dutch and Afrikaans, from the theoretical perspective of construction grammar, on the basis of (primarily) corpus data. There is a strong focus on variation and change, i.e. diachronic variation as well as synchronic variation along geographic, social, stylistic etc. dimensions. The project is not restricted to the standard varieties of both languages (i.e. Netherlandic, Belgian and Surinam Dutch; Standard Afrikaans) but also includes regional varieties (e.g. Flemish dialect, Kaaps) or the (strategic) use of constructions in specific genres (e.g. fictional prose or the language of sports). The project aims to contribute to construction grammatical theorizing on topics such as constructional change, grammatical productivity, the nature and impact of constructional links in the grammatical network and the nature of constructional meaning.
