Project description

Ecosystem services are the goods and services an ecosystem and which have an impact on the welfare / well-being of society. The concept of ecosystem services allows us to approach the different environmental problematics from a more integrated vision development. Ecosystems can have same impact on water / management as protect against flooding and denitrification, climate change through carbon storage, air quality, recreation. So the integral modeling of ecosystem services includes kwanitatief or qualitatively describe all kinds of ecological processes, both related to water and land use, and socio-economic processes. All of these processes differ in the degree of spatial detail, complexity and skill levels. Examples of integrated network models that can handle these different levels of information are Bayesian belief networks. fuzzy cognitive maps and dynamic system models. The PhD will focus on the development of such models in the Flemish context. More specifically, will be zoomed in on Bayesian belief networks used spatially explicit, by embedding them in a GIS-based environment, allowing scenarios to be calculated spatially differentiated within a basin or region. In this way an insight is obtained into the relationships between water, land use, ecosystems and their economic effects, so that more sustainable options can be work and substantiated.
