Het onderzoek situeert zich binnen de systeemtheorie en de regeltechniek. Het is interdisciplinair en heeft zijn eigen specifieke kenmerken en methodologieën. De systeembenadering en de notie van feedback zijn twee dergelijke kenmerken. Er wordt basisonderzoek verricht in verschillende disciplines (niet-lineaire dyanmica, modellering, identificatie en model-predictieve, robuuste en optimale regeling) die toegepast wordt in een steeds meer toenemend aantal andere disciplines: milieu, communicatiesystemen, robotica, netwerken, grafentheorie, computerwetenschappen, biologische en biomedische systemen.
