Project description
This research pillar focuses on the development and valorisation of biobased packaging materials for food applications, whereby extra functionality is added such as antimicrobial properties or improved gas and water vapour barriers. The focus here is on the use of residual or side streams from the food sector for biobased packaging materials such as chitosan. For the functionalisation, a wide range of techniques are examined such as plasma techniques for the integration of antimicrobial components or processing techniques for combining different biobased materials such as lamination or co-extrusion. The developed packaging materials are evaluated for their potential to extend the shelf life of food products.
