Raman spectroscopy is an analytical method that offers many advantages for the analysis of archaeological and art objects. The method is non-destructive and allows the molecular composition of objects to be studied. This research can contribute to provenance determination or to the investigation of production processes. Being a molecular technique, Raman spectroscopy can also contribute to the study of crystal formation and degradation processes. Moreover, this method features excellent spatial resolution, which, combined with a stable motorised system and suitable data processing techniques, allows us to obtain an image that represents the spatial distribution of the molecules over the surface of the object. Thus, molecular and spatial information can be combined, yielding new insight into the processes that occur. The proposed research aims to explore and develop the advantages and disadvantages of Raman spectroscopy and macro-Raman mapping within archaeometry.
