Project description
This project examines the use of allegory in twelfth-century exegetic literature from monastic circles. The central text is Hildegard of Bingen’s visionary trilogy, which is linked to allegorical commentaries and parables. The project examines the hypothesis that this use of allegory is didactic and serves to dramatise the reader’s role in the text.
