To respond to high care demands and burden on healthcare professional (HCP)-teams in hospital care, care models involving advanced practice nurses (APN) / specialized nurses working either independently and/or interdependently with other members of the HCP-team or (partially) as substitutes for doctors can be a solution, defined as Nurse-Led Care models (NLC). In Belgium, NLC are at early-stage and no collaborative practice agreements, defining the collaboration between physicians and APN / specialized nurses in NLC exist. Although outcomes of NLC at patient-level have been widely studied, little is known about NLC outcomes at HCP-team and organizational level. Also, insights in NLC implementation processes are essential. Today, data on the processes and dynamics in HCP-teams co-designing NLC models are scarce. Research at governance level such as the Belgian legal, financial aspects and the organizational context is also needed for sustainable integration of NLC.
