When translating potentially ideologically charged (literary and journalistic) texts (in the broadest sense of this word) from Western languages into Russian (and in the opposite direction), historically oriented translation studies has revealed a long and complex tradition of manipulation and censorship.
This project aims to study particular aspects of this process at the two different levels (literature and journalism). Specifically, two case studies will be developed for this purpose: (1) a diachronic survey of the exchange of science fiction literature in translation between Russia and the West and an analysis of the traces of manipulation (by means of adapted paratexts on the one hand and the use of translation shifts on the other), and (2) the rendering of Western news items in translation in the contemporary Russian press, comparing strategies in regime-loyal and opposition press channels.
