Het hele project wordt 'PISA" genoemd: dat staat voor 'Programme for International Student Assessment'. Het doel van het PISA-onderzoek is het genereren van beleidsindicatoren over leerlingenprestaties. Om dit doel te bereiken is gestart met de implementatie van een datastrategie die tot doel heeft om in de toekomst op regelmatige basis gegevens te verzamelen over leerlingenprestaties in enkele basisvakken: taal, wiskunde en wetenschappen.
