De projectdoelstelling van EnOp is de ontwikkeling en demonstratie van embryonale CO2 omzettingstechnologieën voor de opslag van duurzaam opgewekte energie. Einddoel is een set van demonstrators en werkende pilots die zonlicht of duurzaam opgewekte elektriciteit omzetten in chemische energiedragers en/of specialty chemicals.

 
Rol van UGent
 De Universiteit Gent participeerde door de ontwikkeling van een opgeschaald bio-elektrochemisch systeem voor conversie, extractie en omzetting van CO2 in bruikbare koolstofmoleculen. Het proces is gebaseerd op microbiële elektrosynthese (MES), waarbij bacteriën elektriciteit kunnen gebruiken om CO2 om te zetten in organische moleculen.
