Diseases such as teat diarrhea and / or edema disease often occur shortly after weaning. Enterotoxigene (ETEC) or verotoxigenic Escherichia coli (VTEC) that produce F18 fimbriae are a major cause of these diseases that give rise to significant economic losses. These losses are due to mortality, reduced growth and additional costs for medication. The Laboratory of Immunology discovered that F18 + E. coli specifically bind to ABH blood group sugars and that high concentrations of these sugars inhibit in vitro binding of F18 + E. coli to small intestinal villi. It was also shown that the concentration could be reduced 250 times by conjugating these sugars to a protein (HSA) to form multimers. During an IOF-Advanced project, new multimers were produced by a biotech company with expertise in the large-scale production of complex sugars and in the functionalization of sugars. With this project we aim to check the efficiency of the multimere sugar on a company.
