Project description

The Research Center Hoogstraten has first reported in 1997 of Xanthomonas fragariae in fifteen manufacturing companies in the province. In subsequent years, extensive bacterial disease in this region. In the summer of 2003 and in 2004 the attack was even estimated to be 20 to 25% in the north of the province of Antwerp, while there were also signs of deterioration in the remaining provinces of Flanders. In Limburg expands the disease in recent years. Results of a preliminary survey, conducted in August and September 2005 at Strawberry businesses throughout Flanders gave a more accurate picture. More than 34% of the companies interviewed had already Xanthomonas fragariae the company found. The deterioration was found primarily in the propagation of cuttings (21%), the cultivation of plant tray (17%) and on guard beds (22%). Since it is a quarantine disease, therefore it allows the propagation fields a big problem. The average economic cost of production loss and lower quality were estimated at 24 and 35%. The leaf damage resulted in strong growth and consequently reducing production loss. The current project is now providing a comprehensive monitoring, combined with steel names and diagnostic studies of plants showing symptoms. Teel Technical aspects cultivars origin of plant material, etc; are recorded so that at this level can already be examined for possible links when Xanthomonas fragariae is in fact identified by the symptoms.
