Project description

The project focuses on the political traditions that, in the interplay between individuals, institutions and social interactions, dominated the Syro-Egyptian Mamluk sultanate in the 15th century (1412-1517). It aims to validate the hypothesis that a thorough transformation took place, as new traditions emerged, constructed around military slavery (‘mamlukization’) and tantamount to a process of early modern state formation.
