Project description

The International Computer and Information Literacy Study (ICILS) is an international comparative study of digital competences in secondary education. Every five years, the study maps computer and information literacy among students in the second year of secondary education. Since 2018, ICILS includes an additional module that measures student performance in computational thinking. Participation in ICILS provides insight into the skills of Flemish pupils and how they compare with pupils in other participating countries.

Pupil performance in computer and information literacy and computational thinking is measured by means of digital tests. In addition, the study also collects background information regarding the home and school environment using questionnaires for the pupil, the teacher, the school principal and the ICT coordinator.

ICILS is coordinated internationally by the International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement (IEA), which, in addition to ICILS, organises other large-scale studies such as the PIRLS survey on reading literacy and the TIMSS survey on maths and science, both in primary education. ICILS first took place in 2013 with the aim of assessing how prepared students are to study, work and live in a digital world. Because of the increasing importance of digital competences worldwide, the number of participating countries has grown over the editions to more than 30 countries.

On 12 November 2024, the IEA will report the international results of ICILS 2023 for the first time.
