Project description

Purpose
The objectives of this project include:
(1) Supporting caregivers in raising, discussing and further exploring suicidality in and with children and adolescents
(2) lowering the threshold that caregivers and children and adolescents experience in discussing suicidality
(3) offering low-threshold interventions to young people to learn to deal with their suicidal thoughts

To achieve this we want to develop the following practical tools:
- A creative methodology for social workers to talk with children and young people about their suicidal thoughts
- A self-help app for suicidal young people and their environment
Target group
The creative methodology is aimed at social workers who work with children and adolescents (up to 18 years) such as doctors, psychologists, nurses, (ortho) pedagogues and social workers.

The self-help app focuses on suicidal adolescents (up to 18 years) and their environment.

Course
The project will proceed in several phases (for a full description, see item 19).

The creative support material will build on existing methodologies developed by VLESP for children and adolescents and will be tested with input from the field. Children and youth will also be involved during the development of the methodology. After an evaluation study with care providers, it can be implemented.
