Project description

The project starts from the idea that people differ in how much they believe that everything important in life is quantified or quantifiable (belief in quantification). This project aims to develop a measure of  that belief. In addition, it aims to examine putative causes for it, namely greed, competitiveness, and productivity orientation. Finally, this project aims to examine several potential consequences of the belief in quantification. First, endorsing that belief may make people prioritize quantitative information  over qualitative information, even if the latter is more diagnostic. Second, it may make people rely more on heuristics such as the price-quality heuristic. Third, belief in quantification may lead people, more generally, to overestimate the strength of relationships between quantitative variables. Finally, the belief may render people more likely to pursue quantifiable goals, which may adversely affect their well-being.
