De aan Gert Biesta toegekende internationale Francquileerstoel had als thema democratie en eductie. Zowel de democratie als het denken over burgerschapvoeding zijn overhevig aan belangrijke veranderingen, waardoor de vraag naar de relatie tussen democratie en educatie nieuwe aandacht krijgt. Onderzoek naar de relatie tussen democratie en educatie is inspirerend voor het onderzoek naar sociaal werk vanuit sociaal pedagogisch perspectief.
