Projectomschrijving

We study the immunomodulatory mechanism of action of a phosphatase secreted by pathogenic Mycobacteria, and the attenuated vaccine strain M. bovis BCG. Inactivation of this phosphatase in BCG has yielded a vaccine prolonging survival of experimental animals upon lethal infection with tuberculosis. We will also combine this mutation with further BCG-improving manipulations testing synergism towards a strongly improved TB vaccine.
