Highly infectious, highly pathogenic microorganisms responsible for worldwide morbidity and mortality in humans and animals. To combat serious infectious diseases and monitor its vaccination and antimicrobial therapy is very important. But for many micro-organisms are existing vaccines or treatments insufficient or is not available, since the knowledge of the host-pathogen interaction is insufficient or because of resistance to existing drugs. To develop better vaccines and medicines, a good knowledge of the pathogen-host interaction required. Our consortium has a unique expertise to study the interactions. Examination of the pathogen-host interaction should be in strictly controlled laboratory animal facilities Biosafety Level 3. This will soon be provided at Ghent University. For the safe operation of these facilities, it is crucial that all of the material used (among other things, air, liquids, animal waste) is decontaminated before discharge. The infrastructure described in the project application is an essential part of a complete decontamination platform to ensure safety.
