Confocale laser scanning microscopie (CLSM) is een veelgebruikte techniek in de levenswetenschappen voor het maken van hoogwaardige beelden van biologische stalen. De stalen worden belicht door een gefocuste laserstraal die over het staal wordt gescand om fluorescente markers te visualiseren. Fluorescente emissie vanaf elke positie wordt gedetecteerd door een punt detector en een diafragma verwijdert uit-focus emissielicht om het contrast en de resolutie te verbeteren. CLSM resulteert in optische doorsnede en er kan een 3D-reconstructie van het staal worden gemaakt.

De Nikon A1R biedt extra mogelijkheden om zeer snel te scannen met zijn resonante scanner (30FPS), om licht verstrooiing door deeltjes waar te nemen en om spectrale beeldvorming en lineaire unmixing uit te voeren.
