Description
Epilepsy is a disorder of the central nervous system characterised by the repeated and spontaneous occurrence of epileptic seizures. An epileptic seizure is a temporary change in perception, behaviour or consciousness. The seizure occurs due to a sudden, abnormal electrical discharge – a kind of short circuit – in the cerebral cortex. In Belgium, approximately 1 in 100 people suffer from epilepsy. The possible causes of epilepsy are very diverse: structural damage to the brain (e.g. a brain tumour, stroke or haemorrhage), a genetic abnormality, a metabolic disorder (metabolic disease), an infection in the brain, or a disruption in the functioning of the immune system. Sometimes the cause of epilepsy cannot be determined.
