Mag dit online?
Based on research conducted by Ghent University, a platform was developed to encourage reflection on the portrayal of children on social media.
Low awareness of the risks
Interviews have revealed that many Flemish influencers and their children are unaware of the (long-term) consequences of influencer activities. For example, they give little thought to how children will look back in the future on how they are portrayed on social media today. This is logical, because today's parents are the first to capture their children's stories on social media. It is therefore difficult to assess the long-term consequences. Moreover, information about the impact of influencer activities is often fragmented, not easily accessible, contradictory and unclear. Mag dit online wants to do something about this!
Legislative framework in flux
A survey of Flemish influencers revealed that they are insufficiently aware of the current legislation that applies to influencer activities. Moreover, this legislation is not (yet) fully adapted to the reality of social media. However, a lot is happening: various legislative initiatives have been launched. But influencers are not closely following these developments either. Mag dit online wants to guide them in this regard.
Raising awareness and providing information
The Mag dit online website aims to support Flemish influencers with children in two areas:
- Mag dit online raises awareness, for example about the risks of posting images of your child online.
- Mag dit online provides information, for example about the legislation you must comply with or how you can still post images of your child in a “safe” and “responsible” manner.
