Stijn Schauvliege graduated from Ghent University in 2002. After completing a 1 year rotating internship, he joined the Department of Surgery and Anaesthesia of Domestic Animals, where he combined clinical work with PhD research and an alternative residency programme of the European College of Veterinary Anaesthesia and Analgesia (ECVAA). In 2009, he became Diplomate ECVAA and European Veterinary Specialist in Anaesthesia and Analgesia. In 2010 he defended his PhD on cardiovascular depression in anaesthetized horses. Since 2010 he has been the head of the Anaesthesia Service of the Department of Large Animal Surgery, Anaesthesia and Orthopaedics, and since 2022 he holds a position as Associate Professor at the same department. He was a member of the Credentials and Education Committee of the ECVAA from 2010 to 2013, Honorary Secretary of the ECVAA from 2013 to 2020, Vice-President of the ECVAA from April 2020 until April 2023 and ECVAA representative in the European Board of Veterinary Specialisation from 2013 until 2020. He is the current President of the ECVAA.
