Bio
Caroline Baetens is a PhD student at the Department of Literary Studies at Ghent University and the Department of Lingue, Lettere e Culture Moderne at the Alma Mater Studiorum University of Bologna. In 2021 she graduated her masters in Linguistics and Literature at Ghent University with a thesis on the reflection of poetical changes on stage in traditional Dutch and Latin theatre in the 18th Century. She finished the two-year interdisciplinary program Quetelet Lectures at Ghent University in which students are challenged to think about social issues from very diverse perspectives. In the academic year 2021-2022 she studied on a scholarship of the Collegio dei Fiamminghi and worked as a Dutch language tutor at the University of Bologna. She is currently working on the PhD project 'Gardens of Fear and Fame' funded by FWO. This project provides an ecocritical perspective on Dutch garden and country house poems ("hofdicht") from the second half of the 17th Century and the beginning of the 18th Century. The analysis focuses on the tensions between biophilia and ecophobia in these early modern poetic representations of gardens.
