Project description

The general objective of this project is to assess the impact of aquaculture practices in the marine environment for a sustainable aquaculture production through the identification of the meiobenthos and analysis of the nematode diversity in aquaculture farms.
Three different aquaculture practices will be considered namely intensive, extensive and semi-extensive. Meiobenthos will be used to assess the impact of these practices to the environment. These will be compared to the natural undisturbed habitat.
The project will train students in nematode identification and biodiversity analysis. This will also strengthen the research capability of the University in the area of biodiversity, ecology and local environmental quality studies.
