Project description

The Philippines continues to face persistent challenges in improving adolescent health and nutrition, with increasing rates of overweight and obesity, alongside gaps in the early detection and management of hypertension and related cardiometabolic risks. The National Nutrition Survey (NNS) regularly conducted by the Department of Science and Technology – Food and Nutrition Research Institute (DOST-FNRI) provides comprehensive national and sub-national data on health and nutritional status. However, the translation of these findings into practical, locally actionable tools remains limited. The absence of blood pressure (BP) reference values generated specifically to Filipino adolescents contributes to missed opportunities for early screening and timely intervention. Health and nutrition workers also often lack accessible platforms to record measurements, obtain immediate interpretation, and engage meaningfully with national and local data. Addressing these gaps is essential for advancing equitable, evidence-informed actions aligned with national health priorities and the SDGs, including good health and well-being, reduced inequalities, strong institutions, and partnerships.

This project aims to transform NNS data into practical tools for local health use by valorising newly developed adolescent blood pressure reference tables produced through the PhD research of the Global South partner. These reference tables will be incorporated into the existing web-based nutritional assessment platform developed by the DOST-FNRI.
