Project description

The growth of microbial biomass for use as proteinaceous feed & food is becoming a major R&D topic within the protein transition. UGent has a strong team supported by science (VLAIO, FWO, EU) and industrial (private) funding. Key to establish our position is the availability of infrastructure enabling growth, separation and processing of the microbial protein (MP). Current hardware is not designed for this purpose, so we will build a unique set-up consisting of 2 regular and 2 gaslift fermenters with a tailored control that can be flexibly adapted. The systems will have dedicated gas supply which together with other parameters can be controlled. Building a tailored MP platform will enable novel routes for local and sustainable food & feed; in extension the platform can be used for biopolymer production. >>MicPro will accommodate the needs of UGent researchers to test new organisms, optimize their growth as well as serve different industrial clients in their search for tailored MP products.
