Project description

The project is a fundamental study of plasma-surface interactions in the medical context of wound healing and topical introduction of molecules through the skin. As a first step, advanced plasma diagnostics will be applied to quantify the active species produced in an atmospheric pressure plasma jet to unravel the role of various species at molecular penetration. Secondly, the plasmainduced effects on various bio-relevant surfaces will be investigated in post-treatment analyses. Starting with a skin-simulating material, the complexity will be gradually increased by incorporating a liquid medium with cells and a biofilm on the exposed surface. The final step consists of in-vivo animal tests to quantify the topical introduction of molecules and to determine the skin healing dynamics. A successful realization of the project will provide the scientific grounds to initiate clinical tests on wound healing and painless drug delivery using plasma.
