My research focus has so far been primarily on the transmission of ideas and the translation of philosophical discourse, particularly between Great Britain and France, during the long eighteenth century. I have worked on peritextual and discursive interventions by translators in the works of authors such as Rousseau, La Mettrie, Locke, and Luzac. This has allowed me to identify strategies of associative mediation in the voice of translators and observe patterns of amplificatio and brevitas through which translators shape the original arguments for their new readership. The new project builds on my knowledge of historical translation strategies and expands the studied corpus to contemporary literary texts and other culturally embedded discourse. Themes that may be explored include the translation of stylistic devices, the translation of texts in contexts of institutional censorship, and the translation of postcolonial literature.
