Mycotoxins are fungal metabolites that are found on crops used in animal feed. These contaminants have toxic effects such as feed refusal, fertility disorders, carcinogenicity and immunosuppression. Their effects are well studied in terrestrial animals, but there is a growing concern in the aquaculture sector.
This MYCAQUA project aims to provide insights into the toxicology of mycotoxins in fish, their interaction with antibiotics and to contribute to finding appropriate solutions for the sector. Specific objectives are:
1. To develop a multi LC-MS/MS method for the monitoring of biomarkers for mycotoxin exposure in fish.
2. The study of the toxicokinetics of mycotoxins in fish (absorption, distribution, metabolism, excretion).
3. To develop an animal model for the efficacy testing of mycotoxin detoxifiers. This will provide opportunities for collaboration/valorisation with feed companies.
4. Checking interactions between mycotoxins and antibiotics frequently used in aquaculture.
