Project description

The proposed project will elucidate aspects of the oppositional history of the Jain community by studying how Jains characterized their others, namely the Brahmans, in the Dharmaparīkṣās, which are narrative texts written from the tenth century onwards. The texts will be studied diachronically and in comparison to historical information on the Jains using theories of ‘othering’ as analytical framework.
