(Peri)-urbanization of Ethiopian ethnically contested cities and their resultant protests are transforming the spatial, political, and social landscape of the country in general and urban areas in particular. Using an ethnographic approach, this research explores how authoritarian urban policies work, the production of protests, and how the claim of land- and city ownership contributes to urban transformation by focusing on the cities of Addis Ababa and Dire Dawa.
