Although rumen microbes provide ruminants with the unique ability to utilize structural carbohydrates and non-protein-nitrogen, they also degrade high-quality nutrients such as essential amino acids, vitamins and polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA). Accordingly, rumen bypass products have been developed and are commercially available. However, each of the technologies currently used to produce rumen bypass products show serious shortcomings, which hampers commercialization on a larger scale. We proposed a novel technology relying on a natural mechanism based on polyphenol oxidase (PPO), which is present in diverse sidestreams of the agro- and food industry. This enzyme converts diphenols to reactive quinons. Former in vitro research provided proof of principle that intense complexation of quinons with proteins in an oil in water emulsion can prevent up to 90% of the rumen degradation of PUFA. A patent application is in preparation Strengthening the IP position of the patent application is the main objective of this StarTT. This includes providing in vivo proof of concept as well as improved characterization of PPO and diphenol sources. A patent application, including an in vivo proof of principle, will be particularly attractive towards future industrial partners. Several potential, future industrial partners have been identified including both multinational companies with global operations as well as SMEs. Several of them explicitly expressed commercial interest in obtaining an exclusive license on new rumen bypass technologies, given the growing market of these specialty products and the importance of the compound feed production for cattle.
