Project description

Research in the UGent-CoCooN group is focused on the development and comprehension of thin film materials in the context of socially relevant applications. We develop thin films and nanomaterials and systematically study their properties governed by their composition, structure, and surface and interface nature. Research in the field of surfaces and coatings requires carefully controlled conditions, to avoid contamination. With the VACLAB initiative, we strive to establish a unique, integrated ultra-high vacuum setup that incorporates surface pretreatments, atomic layer deposition (ALD), and advanced surface characterization techniques such as x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and scanning probe microscopy (SPM), all within a single, interconnected cluster setup. This setup will facilitate sample transfer, surface pretreatment, deposition, and characterization while maintaining the sample within the ultra-high vacuum (UHV) environment. Through the development of this unique setup, we aim to seize on opportunities for collaborations with companies that are exploring nanocoatings in the fields of micro- and power-electronics, Li-ion batteries and electrocatalysts.
