Project description

To respond to high care demands and burden on healthcare professional (HCP) teams in primary and hospital care, strengthened by the Covid-19 pandemic, care models involving nurse practitioners (NPs) who act as substitutes for doctors can be a solution. In Belgium, NP-led care is at early-stage. Although outcomes of NP-led care at patient-level have been widely studied, mainly in primary care settings, little is known about NP-sensitive outcomes at HCP-team level. Also, insights in NP implementation processes are essential. Today, data on the processes and dynamics in HCPs teams and healthcare managers co-designing NP-led care models are scarce. Research at governance level such as Belgian legal, financial aspects and the organizational context is also needed for sustainable integration of NP-led care. A set of NP-sensitive outcomes on HCP-team level relevant for different healthcare settings will be validated in focus groups with (inter)national experts. The set will be tested in four hospital departments and two primary care settings integrating NP-led care. In these settings we will also investigate NP implementation processes through a participatory action research approach with HCP teams and healthcare managers. In the project, governance aspects of NP-led care focusing on legal, financial and organizational aspects of the Belgian healthcare system will be considered by means of a document analysis and focus groups and interviews with key stakeholders.
