This project aims to study the role of host-associated microbial communities in the efficacy of antimicrobial agents for the treatment of bacterial biofilms in the context of chronic lung disease. The innovative approach of this project is to develop three-dimensional (3-D) tissue models that mimic the host lung epithelium as well as the host-associated microbial communities. The use of in vitro models that more closely mimic the in vivo situation will allow results to be extrapolated more efficiently to the patient, thus speeding up the development of new, patient-centred treatment strategies. In addition, it is anticipated that this project will reshape our current approach to the treatment of infectious diseases by managing the composition of the host microbiome to increase the efficacy of antimicrobial agents.
