Project description

The current project focuses on empathic accuracy (EA) or daily mindreading, which is considered as the outcome of a process of empathic inference-making. Previous research demonstrated that accurate understanding plays a crucial role in intimate relationships. The level of EA refers to the perceiver’ accuracy in inferring the specific content of their partner’ (target) thoughts/feelings. It is often said that some people are better than others in inferring thoughts/feelings, however, the search for individual-dfference predictors of EA has resulted in a complex mix of inconsistent results. Later on, research has also described motivation as a predictor of EA, as the extent to which a perceiver is motivated appears to influence his/her level of EA. So, perceivers can manage their EA, dialing it up or down depending on their motives. Although both ego- and relationship-driven motives for EA exist, they have not been examined together. Furthermore, inference-making is a process unfolding in the moment when partners are communicating with one another, however, we lack knowledge on how these processes evolve during interaction, and how it is influenced by other interaction processes. Therefore, the aim of this project is to summarize research on the individual/motivational predictors of EA, investigate the relative influence of motives underlying EA, explore the co-fluctuations in partners’EA, and investigate the influence of interaction processes (selective attention) on EA.
