Drought tolerance in strawberry is studied by a candidate gene approach based on observed physiological and biochemical adaptations of the plant. Their potential role in drought tolerance is established 1) at the gene level and/or 2) at the level of gene regulation. The identification of candidate genes for drought tolerance in strawberry should ultimately lead to gainful applications in crop improvement and in cultivar selection for arid regions.
