The world is confronted with a range of grand challenges, including pollution and poverty. Certified B Corporations (CBCs) represent a growing global movement that uses traditional business and market-oriented models to tackle these grand societal challenges. We will develop a unique, multi-country, longitudinal dataset on CBCs (and matched non-CBCs). This data will allow us to use the context of CBCs to develop new theoretical and empirical insights by addressing three under-explored research questions: (1) Why has the BCorp certification been adopted at a different rate in different countries? (2) How do different sources of entrepreneurial finance affect CBCs’ impact scores? (3) Are CBCs better shielded from environmental shocks? Combined, we address the call for more research that develops new perspectives that move beyond theories of economic rationality and beyond profit-maximising entrepreneurial firms
