Background: Brachytherapy, which involves placing a radiation source inside or in close proximity to the tumor, is crucial in treating various cancers, notably prostate and gynaecology cancers. Precise dose delivery is fundamental for its effectiveness. However, observed discrepancies in dose delivery can range from minor variations to significant overages of more than 100%, often due to patient anatomical changes and technical challenges such as inaccuracies in radiation source placement.
Objective: To significantly enhance the precision and safety of brachytherapy, an essential treatment technique for prostate, and gynaecology cancers by using 2 types of scintillators for real-time in-vivo dosimetry: BCF-10 plastic scintillators and inorganic scintillators. Our aim is to rectify the potentially substantial discrepancies observed in radiation dose during treatment delivery, thereby markedly improving treatment efficacy and patient safety.
