This CRA aims to improve understanding of the temporal distribution and causes of climate variability in equatorial East Africa at inter-annual to millennial time scales, and of their impacts on the region's ecosystems and human environment. For this purpose we apply methods of paleoenvironmental reconstruction to a uniquely long and high-quality archive of past climate and environmental history contained in the bottem sediments of lake Challa near Mt. Kilimanjaro
