The overall aim of the project was to provide an overview of the current situation and trends on female genital mutilation in the European Union (all 28 Member states). The project focused on prevalence, policy and legal framework and the actors that work on FGM as well as the instruments and methods they use. The project was commissioned by the European Institute for Gender Equality, and consisted of a desk study in the 28 countries, as well as an in-depth phase (interviews) in nine countries. It resulted in a range of policy recommendations for the Euroepan Commission.
