Project description

Commercial cultivation of microalgae is one of the possible alternatives as a new application in vacant greenhouses in Flanders and the Netherlands. One of the best known microalgae is spirulina, which contains a source of phycocyanin (blue dye) in addition to useful content. Within the project 'The blue chain' it was examined to what extent spirulina and its derivative phycocyanin can be used as a sustainable raw material for high-quality applications in various sectors.

Role of Ghent University
To close the gap between research and practice, Ghent University, together with project partner Inagro, is responsible for scaling up duckweed cultivation from laboratory research to a full-fledged business-relevant production chain. In addition, agricultural by-products will be tested for their suitability as a basic solution for Spirulina and/or duckweed cultivation. Furthermore, Ghent University will facilitate communication and dissemination activities, as well as ensure the further application of project results through the Biorefine Cluster Europe.
